Why Attending Preschool Is Beneficial For Children

By Bertha Wells

Attending preschool for a year or more is associated with various benefits for children. Pre-k gives kids the chance to first enter a nurturing environment, and its benefits can not be mentioned enough. These pluses include offering kids socialization opportunities with other youngsters, chances to share with other children, opportunities to learn basic learning concepts, the ability to be part of a structured learning environment, the chance to be apart from their parents, and opportunities to work on creative projects. These different aspects will be discussed further below.

On a starting note, pre-kindergarten is most often the first opportunity that a youngster has to become social with a larger group of youngsters who are the same age as him or her. Most preschools make sure that playing freely is a large part of their daily school schedules, as many studies have cited how free play is extremely beneficial to very young children. Playing freely enhances kids' fine motor skills and their ability to work in teams, and it also offers youngsters various opportunities to interact with other children.

Opportunities to share also abound in a pre-k environment. Very young children, even those with at least one sibling, may not want to share toys and other items at home, and in preschool sharing is strongly encouraged. The sharing is a life skill that promotes empathy and generosity, and it is something preschool teachers look to instill in their students each day.

The learning of basic concepts is taught to young nursery school students today as well. Within a nursery school class, in particular one for kids ages four and up who will soon be entering kindergarten, play is no longer what takes up most of a child's day. In many cases, youngsters are also learning their ABCs and numbers in order to prepare them for learning how to read and to conduct basic mathematical tasks.

In pre-k, kids are also introduced to a very structured day. For instance, they may play in the morning, do letters/numbers in the afternoon, arts and crafts after that, then snack time, etc. Doing the same things at the same time each day is very important for young children and gets them into a good daily routine. The structure will come in handy when the kids start kindergarten the following year.

Being apart from parents is yet another benefit of going to pre-k for a child. It is many times the first chance that a child has a prolonged opportunity to be away from parents and in an environment when he or she can socialize, learn, and play with his or her peers.

The chance to work on creative projects and activities is yet another benefit of nursery school. Children tend to work on many arts and crafts projects which enhance their creativity and decorate the walls of their parents and grandparents at home.

These are a variety of benefits that are associated with a child's going to preschool. They include the chance to socialize with peers, share with other kids, learn basic school skills, be in a structured environment, be away from parents and with peers for a while, and work on many creative arts and crafts activities.
