Community Needs Assessment And Its Purpose

By Helene Norris

In order for communities to meet the needs of the group as a whole and find out which things need attention, it becomes imperative for residents to provide input. The best way to do this is by asking for this information. One way to accomplish this is through a community needs assessment. What exactly are these assessments, how do they work, and when are they necessary?

Talking directly to members of communities helps organizations gather important input and create a detailed plan of action based on set goals. Assessments are specifically designed to provide information about the resources available, or lack thereof. With this information, strategic planning can continue unhindered from this point. Once assessments are completed, a plan for creating and completing goals can be made.

The assessments have a few main ways they can be done. Special group interviews, called focus groups, are one way. These groups are made of randomly chose residents that will be best able to represent all the residents. There are specific questions that are asked to spark a conversation with the individuals of a focus group. Through this conversational group, information and opinions about resources can be gathered from the people that use them.

Assessments can also be done through forums. A forum is a type of meeting where people come together on their own. They are usually scheduled in advance and provide residents with a means to voice their concerns and opinions regarding certain things within the communities. It can be difficult, however, to keep people on topic sometimes.

Surveys are also common choices. You can choose one of two types of surveys. One is by mailing out printed surveys within the communities. People fill them out and send them back. The other option is to have people go door to door and give quick interviews. Information gathered from surveys is often much less than using other methods.

It is important to know when there is a need for assessments. They are not always necessary. For example, if the needs of communities are already known or there is not any further input required, assessments can waste time that can be used for planning. If there has already been one completed within a reasonable amount of time, they are not necessary.

After an assessment is complete, sorting through the information is the next step. Prioritize information that has come from your target group, such as families or the elderly. Compare new information with the old and look for patterns and gaps. From the organized information, an action plan can be designed that creates goals and plans to meet those goals.

A community needs assessment can be a valuable tool for various organizations that seek to help make communities better for the residents. The assessments provide the most basic understanding of all the needs, strengths, and problems that residents have. Input helps these organizations create plans that benefit the communities the most.
