The Work Of Custom Thermoforming Companies

By Marissa Velazquez

Thermoforming is a process of manufacturing plastic to create a usable product. The process involves heating a sheet of plastic to a pliable forming temperature, molding it to form a specific shape, and finally, the product is trimmed to form the desired product needed. When heating, the temperatures should be high enough so that the sheet can be molded and cooled to the desired appearance of the output. Custom thermoforming companies therefore try to make products in line with the needs of their clients.

There are other industry terminologies used to refer to the process of custom thermoforming. They include plastic thermoforming, vacuum forming and pressure forming. All these processes follows the same procedure and uses three basic factors; pressure, heat and vacuum.

There are specific quality measures that must be put in place to ensure proper production through this process. Examples include controlled computers, temperature, humidity as well as using in-line machinery. These aspects are collectively used to ensure sustainability and production of high quality packaging products.

Buying the thermo-formers from the same manufacturer is highly recommendable. This is because it restores efficiency and equally reduces the cost of making purchase and maintenance. Additionally, it also promotes skill setting, improved technical staff familiarity, tooling standardization as well as minimizing spare part inventory.

Standardized tooling, for instance, is mainly used to speed up the tooling changeover, which enhances production of shorter and profitable runs. The equipment should have unique qualities that enhance efficiency. For instance, they should have standard settings for heat, vacuum, pressure and mechanical press control.

Thermoforming can be conducted in many forms, but the two most common are; the basic form, which uses very little machines such as the size of a tiny tabletop to heat the plastic pieces, and the maximized form, which uses a vacuum. This method is mainly used when grouping. Contrarily, there are more dynamic methods that use big machines for heating and chopping of the sheet of plastics. While it is very fast and progressive, the method is also more effective than the simple one despite the fact that the quantity of production is based on the size of each mold, the machine, and the number of formed parts.

There are two types of thermoforming; thin-gauge and thick gauge. Basically, thin-gauge method is the production of disposable products for food, medical and retail industries. Things like lids, containers, cups and plates. Thick-gauge on the other hand deals with production of a wide range of products from plastic ballets to refrigerator liners to vehicle doors and dash panels just to mention but a few. It is important to note that thermoforming differs from all other methods of plastic processing.

In case of high volume production sets of roll feeds and plastic films are channeled in that, the spikes and pins form holes on the sheets. The spikes also aid the movement of the sheet stop actual places or high temperatures. In those places they form regions of closing the mating mold and pressure box as a vacuum is applied to eliminate gases that have been trapped. Nevertheless, when looking for custom thermoforming companies first, you need to ensure that they are able to meet your specific needs.
